Archibald Barclay Bolt
Master Mariner, Pawnbroker and Gold Medal Award inventor.
Born the fifth child of Laurence Hughson Bolt and and his wife Grace Bolt nee Ganson
Archibald Barclay Bolt was born at Twageos House, (old tenement building, pictured left) on the outskirts of Lerwick, Shetland on 26 January 1841.

After the death of his mother Grace, in November 1850 Archibald and his siblings were sent out to other relations to be looked after as Laurence could spend several months at sea sailing from one port to another.
According to the 1851 census for Scotland, Archibald was being looked after by his uncle and aunt Francis and Elizabeth Bolt of Smithfield, Walls, Shetland, his sister Ann Elizabeth aged 13 was a Servant for the Slater family of Melby, Walls, Shetland and Jane Margaret age 4 was living with Grace's sister Tamar Ganson.
We know from records that Laurence married Ann Ganson, Grace's sister in Leith, Edinburgh on the 11 July 1853.
Records for 1854 show that Archibald acquired his first taste of the sea when he was just a boy of 13 years and is listed as a member of the crew on the sailing ship "DON" Registered Port Newcastle.
Apprentice's Indentures dated 14 May 1855 for Archibald age 14 show he was indentured into the Merchant Navy for 4 years at the
Port of South Shields, and will serve aboard the sailing vessel "ADAM LODGE" to work for Messrs James Edwards of South Shields & Lawson Thoburn of Fulwell, Sunderland. (click here to view the page about this vessel)

On 17 October 1863 at the age of 22, Archibald married Jane Ann Thornton, a butchers daughter of North Shields at Christ Church, North Shields

The 1871 Census tells us that Archibald's wife Jane Ann Bolt was living with her parents William and Margaret Thornton, at 12 Nile Street, North Shields with two younger siblings and three of her own children; John Laurence Bolt, Robert Thornton Bolt and Archibald Barclay Bolt Jn., their forth child.
Archibald Barclay Bolt senior is not mentioned in the census, so I can only assume he was at sea at that time.

1879 Kelly's Directory shows that Archibald is listed as Master Mariner and the family living at Princess Street, North Shields. Also for that year Archibald is listed as the Master of a sailing vessel named INVINCIBLE.

June 1880 family announce the birth of twins Grace Margaret & Kate (Catherine) Elizabeth.
As the family grew the April 1881 census shows us that Archibald now 40 years of age, a Master Mariner and was living with his family at 16 Princess Street, North Shields. 1882, Chief mate of the steamer: MADRID, ON: Extract (left) from SHIELDS DAILY GAZETTE AND SHIPPING TELEGRAPH, Tuesday, June 6 1882 According to Kelly's Directory of 1883 the family were now resident at 30 Waterloo Place, 13 Preston Road, North Shields. Another move in 1885 took the family to 12 Frank Place, North Shields. The census for 1891 show that Archibald now 50 was with wife Jane Ann, son Archibald age 20, twin daughters Grace and Catherine aged 11 and were living at Preston Cottage, in the village of Preston, Tynemouth. Occupation Pawnbroker.
The Electoral Register for 1892 show that the family had moved to 45 Brighton Grove, Arthurs Hill, Newcastle upon Tyne with a house and shop at 135 & 137 Stanhope Street, Arthur's Hill, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Kelly's Directory for 1894 also lists Archinald B Bolt residing at 45 Brighton Brove, Arthurs Hill, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Conservatives, led by the Marquess of Salisbury, dominated British politics after the Liberals' split over the issue of 'Home Rule' for Ireland in 1886. Salisbury's successor and nephew, Arthur Balfour, shared with his uncle an interest in foreign imperial policy. He was premier for two-and-a-half years.
1902 the family record the death of daughter Grace Margaret age 21.
The following year, 31 May 1903 the family record the death of son John Lawrence age 36.
it is recorded that John fell from the roof of his house, whilst making repairs, he leaves a widow and seven children, the youngest just two years old.

By 1910, Wards Directory show Archibald listed as Pawnbroker, but now residing at 27 Sefton Avenue, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne with Pawnbroker shop's at 135 Stanhope Street & 106 Buddle Road, with first floor flats above the shop's all in the Benwell area of Newcastle.

Edward VII dies and is succeeded by George V
Both Edward VII, who died in 1910, and his son, George V, ensured that the monarchy was more active than it had been in the latter years of Victoria's reign, but they exercised their influence discreetly. Edward's funeral brought together the royalty of Europe - many of them his relations - for the last time before war broke out in 1914.
The 1911 census tells us that Archibald, occupation Pawnbroker was aged 70 and his wife Jane was 71, they were residing at
27 Sefton Avenue, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne with daughter Catherine Elizabeth, 31 and adopted daughter Madge Anderson, 21.

'Titanic' sinks with the loss of 1,503 lives
The White Star liner 'Titanic' was the largest vessel in the world at the time of her launch. Her builders and owners claimed that she was 'practically unsinkable', but on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York she collided with an iceberg and sank within hours, with the loss of 1,503 lives. 'Titanic' could carry over 3,500 people, but was equipped with only enough lifeboats to save 1,178, a fact that contributed to the massive loss of life.
Kelly's Directory for 1914 also list Archibald Barclay Bolt residing at 27 Sefton Avenue, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne.
At the out break of the First World War, Archibald, still very active continued to the run the Pawnbroker businesses at 135 Stanhope Street and 106 Buddle Road, Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne.

In 1918, five years after the death of his wife Jane, Archibald Barclay Bolt moved from Newcastle Upon Tyne down to Dorset.
He lived at the Old Rectory, in the village of Belchawell until his death on 21 July 1921 aged 81
